Modeling Tips

The following includes information on Getting Started, Internet Modeling, Finding Work, Model Testing, and Pricing.

Getting Started:

The first thing that every model needs is pictures. In order to be hired for a modeling job, you need to be able to show potential clients what you look like.

How do you get pictures? We are not talking about snap shots taken by parents or friends, but a professional portfolio. There are two ways to accomplish this. One, go to a photographer and pay several hundred dollars for a professional modeling portfolio. A cheaper alternative is to find photographers willing to do a TFP (Trade for Photo) session with you. In a TFP agreement, both you and the photographer agree to exchange time and effort to produce images that you can both use to promote your work. This costs the model nothing but it will take a little more time and effort on the models part.

Should you go to a modeling school? Most modeling schools are really finishing schools for young ladies. The only real positive is that they do produce photos of the models that they can later use for self-promotion. Given the large expense of most modeling schools, you can find a cheaper way of putting together a professional modeling portfolio.

Internet Modeling:

The Internet is a powerful communication tool and a useful way to promote yourself. However, for paying jobs, the internet is primarily used for glamour and figure photography rather than fashion or catalog work. There are many models who make a living off of this type of work, but if you are uncomfortable with nudity you should avoid internet modeling and stick with the traditional Modeling Agency.

Finding Work:

Once you have your portfolio in order there are two basic ways of promoting yourself. You can use a professional modeling agency. They are found in every large city and do a good job of finding models work. The drawbacks are that they do not accept all models and when they do find you work they keep 15% of your fees (some agencies charge much more than this). However, an agency can't be beat in the areas of fashion, lifestyle and catalog work for paying modeling jobs.

Model Test Shoots:

We will, occasionally, do TFP (Trade for Photo) with models that have a look we need for our portfolio or to fit a particular project. TFP means a 50-50 split between the model and the studio. It is a collaborative effort to give the models photos that they want and photos that we want. This allows us to try out different looks, lighting arrangements, new cameras, etc. We will work as hard as you are willing to create marketable images.

Scheduling:

We normally schedule photo shoots on weekends but have most Mondays open in the summer and fall months. A signed release is required. The studio has the copyright and negatives of all photos. You receive the rights to the images for your own promotion. This may include website, portfolio, Comp cards, etc. We shoot both B&W as well as colors using both 35mm film and digital cameras. We can shoot on location and in the studio, especially during the winter, using professional strobe lighting.

Escorts are permitted, but limited to one only. They must stay out of the way of the shoot. A parent or guardian is required for all models below the age of 18.

Compensation:

Call for information.  in a Time For Prints (TFP) arrangement, we normally provide you a CD of the images of your shoot for a nominal charge.

Model Portfolio Pricing:

Call for price packages.

Escorts: Escorts are permitted, but limited to one only. They must stay out of the way of the shoot. A parent or guardian is required for all models below the age of 18.
